Is RecordStation free?
Yes. RecordStation is free to download and free to use. There is no subscription, no in-app purchase and no advertising.
Do I need a Spotify account, or Spotify Premium?
Neither. You never connect a Spotify account to RecordStation and there is nothing to authorise. Spotify is only used to look up albums and their cover art, through RecordStation's own API account, so search works the same whether you are on Spotify Premium, on the free tier, or not on Spotify at all. You only need Spotify if you want to tap through and actually play an album.
Does RecordStation play music?
No. RecordStation keeps track of what you want to hear and what you thought of it; playback happens in Spotify. Each album has a button that opens it in Spotify when you are ready to listen.
Is RecordStation available on Android?
Not yet. RecordStation is an iOS app today. An Android version is planned, but there is no release date to share.
Does RecordStation work with Apple Music, Tidal or YouTube Music?
Not today. The album catalogue and the play button both come from Spotify. You can still track any album that exists in that catalogue, but RecordStation will not open it in another service.
How do reminders work?
A reminder is a notification on your own device, so you do not need to keep the app open. When you save an album you can ask to be reminded in an hour, in a day, in a week, or this evening. RecordStation also nudges you about a saved album on its own if you have not listened to it after a few weeks. Reminders are one-off rather than repeating, and the notification opens straight to the album.
What are logs and tags?
When you have heard an album you can mark it listened and log the experience: the date you listened, a slider for how much you enjoyed it, and any number of tags describing the listen. Tags come from a fixed set rather than being typed freely, so the same words mean the same thing across every album you log.
Does RecordStation work offline?
Partly. Albums and logs you have already loaded stay readable without a connection, so you can look through your list on a plane or underground. Searching for a new album and saving one both need a connection.
Where is my data stored, and what do I need to sign up?
Signing in takes an email address and a six-digit code sent to it — there is no password to choose and no social login. Your saved albums, reminders and logs are stored in RecordStation's hosted database, so they survive reinstalling the app or moving to a new phone.
